INT. CELESTIAL NAVIGATION CLASS - NIGHT
JOY
Wow.
Professor Landis hands Joy a sextant along with a business card. Joy studies the card.
E. Denton Meriweather U.S.N. retired. Esq.
LANDIS
I can not guarantee you’ll use the sextant, but you will learn a lot about boating - and then some. He’s always asking me for leads on crew members.
JOY
But I never crewed.
Class calls to Landis.
CLASS

INT. FOYER - CAPTAIN'S HOUSE - DAY
JOY
Hello, I’m Joy.
MERIWEATHER
Joy? But I spoke on the phone with a Joey.
DODY
I guess the jokes on you captain.
MERIWEATHER
Joy, eh? Lemondade from lemons I always say.
DODY
Captain? How about something to drink? To celebrate!
MERIWEATHER
Splendid idea. I am a bit parched. Iced tea for me. Better yet - birch beer all around. Then we’ll discuss the trip.

INT. FLORIDA AIRPORT - DAY
Meriweather has an empty animal carrier in one hand and a duffel in the other. Next to him walks a gray muzzled dog and just behind walks Joy toting her own duffel. An airport security guard stops them.
SECURITY
Excuse me sir. I am going to have to ask you
to put the dog on its leash or into the travel
carrier.
MERIWEATHER
He’s not of any harm.
SECURITY
We’ve had a complaint.
MERIWEATHER
Surely not that old hag at the lift? He only
sniffed her.
Security shrugs.
MERIWEATHER (CONT’D)
Why he has every right to walk free as you or I
do.
Security shrugs again.
MERIWEATHER (CONT’D)
We live in a litigious society. Bah. Bear, you should have bit her.

INT. CABIN BOW BUNK - DAY
MERIWEATHER
What’s the matter Joy? You look perturbed?
JOY
My room smells like mildew. It has all this canvas sails stuffed in there. The cushions are all damp. It’s a mess.
MERIWEATHER
Probably just the spinnaker gear. Well you can sleep on one of the galley benches.
JOY
Ugh.
MERIWEATHER
No? Well, here’s what you do then. Open your bow hatch. Drag all the canvas topsides - cushions too - and before you know it in this hot sun things will get dried out. A hot sun works wonders. Hop to it. The sooner you get under way the sooner you’ll get it all sorted out.

EXT. SUPERMARKET - DAY
CURTIS
Sorry dad for worrying, but I just don’t want to read about you in the papers.
MERIWEATHER
We are simply delivering a boat. In thirty days you’ll see you’ve worried for nothing. Besides, I’m the one who should be worried. Do I look worried?
CURTIS
No! And that’s what’s got me worried. A lot can go wrong.
MERIWEATHER
And I know it. I’m banking on just the opposite. I’m expecting smooth sailing all the way.

Meriweather with a list.
MERIWEATHER
Last chance. Anything you can not live without? Just sing out now.
JOY
Coffee. Toast for breakfast, so some bread.
MERIWEATHER
We’ll need some extra batteries for that radio-cassette player of yours. How many does it need?
JOY
Eight D cells.
MERIWEATHER
That many? Well I suppose. I brought along some music cassettes to listen to when radio reception gets weak. (Beat.) I understand they make packaged pre-cooked chickens now. We’ll pick up one or two of those for sandwiches. A bag of kibble for Bear. Look, fresh corn. Well we don’t have that back in Pennsylvania this time of year. Get a dozen. They look plump. Let’s make it two.

EXT. TOPSIDES COCKPIT - DAY
Meriweather at helm. Joy sits nearby with a notepad.
MERIWEATHER
As for mates duties, there is a lot for you to do. Everyday. Let me repeat, everyday. You must check the stuffing box to see we have not taken on any water - excessive or any for that matter. You will check the boat batteries to see there is no problem with holding their charge. Check the engine oil. Check the level on the fresh water tank. I also ask that you make the breakfast coffee. Prepare sandwiches for lunch and dinner when we are not ashore. You’ll also check in the almanac what time sunrise and sunset occurs each day. Then besides your four plus hours each day at the helm you will be in charge of prepping the anchor and rode in the evenings and then stowing it in the mornings after we weigh anchor. Amongst other thing. Got it?
JOY
And what will you do?
MERIWEATHER
What’s that? (Beat.) Well, besides my own time at the helm, I will keep us on course and make all decisions regarding the safe operation of this vessel.
JOY
Oh.

MERIWEATHER
i can’t believed you turned the boat around. My god, how long would you have kept going if I had not noticed. Didn’t they teach you geography in school?
JOY
I got confused. And the compass was fogged and wet.
MERIWEATHER
Confused? It seems to be clear and working fine for me.
JOY
It won’t happen again.
MERIWEATHER
I didn’t quite hear you.
JOY

JOY
I can’t lift it.
MERIWEATHER
I hope we are not snagged. I’ll put the bow right over it.
JOY
It’s coming up now! Lots of weeds and muck.
MERIWEATHER
Muck you say?
Meriweather looks in the piloting book.
MERIWEATHER (CONT’D)
it is listed as hardpan. What does that tell you?
JOY
You need a new pilot book?

JOY
Denton! Denton! Something is wrong!
MERIWEATHER
I must have dozed off. What’s wrong? What is it man?
JOY
The depth finder is crazy! It showed shallow water. It even stopped reading.
MERIWEATHER
The keel on this is five feet. The boat is well off shore a good ways. You could not have scraped bottom. Whew. You had me going there for a minute. It could have been a school of fish. Or a submerged log. Does the chart show any wrecks for here?
JOY
No.
MERIWEATHER
Probably just fish then. Nothing to worry about.

MERIWEATHER
I still can not see how that place can do any business. Who wants to patronize a place that does not sell alcohol?
JOY
Well not everyone drinks. I thought the food was great.
MERIWEATHER
Ridiculous. Well I like my drop and i’m not about to quit. Where’s my book? We won’t be going there again.
Meriweather writes in pilot book.
JOY
No, I don’t suppose so.

MERIWEATHER
How long did you say you cooked this corn?
JOY
Look. I know how to cook corn. We eat it all the time. Nine minutes is salted boiling water. Max.
MERIWEATHER
Can corn go bad? I’ll try another. (BEAT.) Bah. This one too. Inedible. How’s yours?
JOY
Same. Not good.
MERIWEATHER
Suppose you put them in a while longer?
JOY
It won’t help. The corn must be bad. That’s why there was so much and why it was so cheap. Corn is ready in August, not in April.
MERIWEATHER
Blast. Better chuck it all overboard then.

JOY
I can’t believe you told them to look under my bunk!
MERIWEATHER (O.S.)
I was just having a bit of fun. And the thing is, that’s the most obvious place to search. Under the bunk. And they didn’t think to look there. What an outfit. Ha!
JOY
Humph!
MERIWEATHER
Now, now Joy. You told me you had nothing. I see the cover on the flare box is ajar. Intentionally of course, to show me that they checked up on us. Tsk, tsk. No ton of cocaine though. Give a shout if something else comes up. I’ll relieve you in an hours time. I want a bit of a lie down.

Running for ice.
MERIWEATHER
Now remember. Get in and get out. I only want to turn the boat around once.
JOY
What if there is a line?
MERIWEATHER
In this hick town? Preposterous. Still, I will go as slow as possible.
JOY
But!
MERIWEATHER
No buts. Here we go. Jump!
Joy jumps off and runs to the general store at the head of the wharf.
MERIWEATHER (CONT’D)
I will only count to ninety seconds!
Looks at watch.
MERIWEATHER (CONT’D)
Ten seconds!
INT. GENERAL STORE
Joy in line with slow cashier.
MERIWEATHER (O.S.)
Fifty seconds. I’m turning around now.
CASHIER
just the ice miss?
JOY
I only have a five.
CASHIER
I’ll have to find change.
MERIWEATHER
Sixty seconds!
CASHIER
Who’s that yelling?
JOY
My captain. Look, forget the change. I’ll take two bags and you keep the change.
MERIWEATHER
Seventy-five seconds. Where are you Joy?
Joy bursts through the doorway and down the pier just as the boat arrives. She tossed the bags on and collapses on the bow. Cashier comes out to looks.
MERIWEATHER (CONT’D)
Ninety seconds on the dot! Wonderful. Are you all right?
JOY
i’m fine.

JOY
I didn’t think I would need them.
MERIWEATHER
You are welcome to mine. I only brought four but they are all classics. Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Pete Seger, and Mitch MIller. Next time I’m below, I’ll bring them up.

EXT. TOPSIDES - DAY
Motor sailing. Meriweather at helm. He is a bit hung over.
JOY
What’s wrong? Why’d we stop?
MERIWEATHER
I put the engine in neutral. Bad news. Look at how close the dinghy is to the stern. The painter must have got caught around the propeller shaft somehow.
JOY
How did that happen?
MERIWEATHER
We can’t worry about that now. Go down below and get a sharp knife. We’ll have to cut the zodiac free and retie it. Get back Bear! You are not going ashore yet!
Joy brings knife from below.
JOY
Will this do? Feels sharp to me.
MERIWEATHER
it’ll have to do. Now listen up. Strip down to your skivvies. Once you are in the water, follow the line as it goes under the boat. Where it just starts to wrap around the shaft, that is where you are to cut it. Got it?
JOY
Me?
MERIWEATHER
Don’t argue now. I would do it myself, but someone has to stay topsides and supervise.
JOY
Whoa whoa whoa. Let’s think about this.
MERIWEATHER
I did think about it. There is no other way.
JOY
Yes there is. How about I just reach down and cut the line from here?
MERIWEATHER
The line is too expensive. Besides, if it does not get trimmed close, it will just wrap itself around the shaft even more. I know it is not a pleasant situation, but you’ll have to buck up.
JOY
Jesus!
MERIWEATHER
Come on now. I’ll let you have extra dessert tonight. Give me the knife. I’ll hold it while you strip down. At least the water won’t be cold.
JOY
Cold enough!
MERIWEATHER
All right then. No dawdling. Get ready then.
JOY
Arr. Okay. Wait! What about the engine? Aren’t you going to shut it off?
MERIWEATHER
In the middle of this god forsaken place? We can’t risk it. The switch is finicky. It may not restart.
JOY
Finicky? Since when? It has started everday - some days even twice - since day one.
MERIWEATHER
Come on now. I’ll have my hand right on the throttle holding it in neutral the whole time. Nothing can go wrong.
JOY
That’s even worse!
MERIWEATHER
Let’s go damn it. In the water this instant.
JOY
I won’t jump in. Let me climb down into the dinghy first.
MERIWEATHER
All right then. If that is the way it has to be.
Joy climbs into dinghy.
MERIWEATHER (CONT’D)
Now think of the plan and concentrate. You’re shivering. Is it that cold?
JOY
I’m scared.
MERIWEATHER
Well, it will be all over in a minute.
JOY
That doesn’t help.
MERIWEATHER
Now get going . On three. I’ll count off. If you don’t, I’ll yank the line and tip you in myself.
JOY
Wait!
MERIWEATHER
What now?
JOY
The line moved!
MERIWEATHER
Are you sure? You’re not stalling me?
JOY
When you lifted it, the line moved. Try again.
Meriweather pulls on line from above.
MERIWEATHER
Nope. Nothing.
JOY
I have an idea. Give me the bitter end. You go to the helm and turn the wheel. I can see the line is stuck between the rudder and the hull.
Meriweather at helm. Joy pulling on line. She is singing to herself.
JOY
I had a little chicken but it wouldn’t lay an egg.
MERIWEATHER
Joy, what are you doing?
JOY
Pulling the line. Keep turning the wheel!
MERIWEATHER
It sounds like you are singing.
JOY
I’m nervous.
MERIWEATHER
No time for that now! I’m turning the wheel. Anything?
JOY
It’s moving! Go the other way. I’m putting my feet against the stern for more leverage.
MERIWEATHER
Turning.
Line frees up and Joy falls back into the dinghy bottom.
MERIWEATHER (CONT’D)
Good God! Joy! Are you all right? What happened? Speak!
JOY
We’re free! It’s free. Ha ha!
MERIWEATHER
Good god girl - what work! Stupendous. Throw me the bitter end. I’ll pull you in. How’s the line look then?
JOY
Thank you Jesus!
MERIWEATHER
What’s that you say?
JOY
Nothing.
MERIWEATHER

Laundry day.
MERIWEATHER
That’s quite the duffle you have there. You’re not planning on jumping ship on me?
JOY
I have not one clean thing. You said we have some time. I’m going to get some laundry done.
MERIWEATHER
I don’t suppose you have room in there for a pair of my jeans pants do you?
JOY
Why not? Where are they?
MERIWEATHER
Splendid. I’ll just pop below and change out these then. Just a jiffy.
Joy disgusted.
JOY
Great.
MERIWEATHER (O.S.)
A word of caution. This town and the one over the border have the same name but they pronounce it differently. Try not to mix them up. One is Bow-fort and one is Bew-fort.
JOY
Which is which?
MERIWEATHER
I don’t recall. But my notes say the locals are sensitive on the matter.
JOY
It’s Sunday morning, not Saturday night. I’ll just be at the laundrymat.
MERIWEATHER
And Bear and I will stick with the boat. I want to catch up on my reading.
